School of Materials Science and Engineering

School of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) consists of the Department of Polymer Materials Science and Engineering, the Department of Inorganic Materials Science and Engineering, and the Department of Electronic Materials Science and Engineering, the Materials Science and Technology Institute, the Materials Science Institute, the Polymer Materials Institute, the Polymer Electric and Light Materials and Devices Institute, and the Optical Communication Materials Institute.
 
MSE currently has a faculty and staff of 218 members, among whom 58 are full professors (including 3 Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2 Professors of Cheung Kong Scholars, 3 Professors of Pearl River Scholars, and 49 doctoral advisors) and 69 associate professors, associate researchers, as well as senior engineers. More than 76% of the teachers bear Ph.D. MSE has an enrollment of 1,934 students, among whom 1,187 are undergraduate students, 582 graduate students and 165 Ph. D. candidates.
 
MSE has 2 national key discipline doctoral programs: materials science and engineering and biomedical engineering, and the post-doctoral station of materials science and engineering. It also has 2 second-grade discipline doctoral programs of polymer chemistry and physics, and microelectronics and solid-electronics, the former of which is Guangdong top-ranking discipline. The school offers 4 bachelor programs: polymer materials and engineering, materials science and engineering, electronic science and technology, and message panel and electric and light technology.
 
MSE boasts of its well-equipped facilities, which include 2 key laboratories of ministry of education: special function materials and polymer process engineering, 1 Guangdong key laboratory of high performance and function polymer materials, 1 key laboratory of polymer materials of Department of Education of Guangdong Province, and 1 R & D center of Guangdong Province. In the past five years, MSE has undertaken more than 600 projects including projects under "973" Projects, and "211" Projects, major projects of National Nature Science Foundation and Natural Science Foundation for Youth, national key research projects and major military industry research projects, as well as projects of talent training of the ministry of education, major projects of Guangdong Natural Science Foundation, major bidding projects and other important projects. The actual scientific research outlay reached 166 million yuan (RMB). The faculty of the school has published 3,175 theses in key journals at home and abroad, among which 1063 theses are included in Science Citation Index, EI, and ISTP. The School has obtained 16 national and ministerial awards, 143 innovation patents, and more than 100 scientific and technological applications created values accounting for more than 2 billion Yuan (RMB), thus making significant contributions to the economic development, especially to that of Guangdong province .
 
MSE pays considerable attention to the construction of laboratories. Through the developments under "211 Projects", and "985 Projects", it has made great improvements. Now, some of the laboratories have reached world or national advanced level.
